Coming up with a unique theme for a car build is tough. Unless you truly have an unlimited budget to work with, you are quite limited in what you can do. In our case, we had just enough to run wild with…sort of. Last summer, Chevy gave us a Sonic RS hatch to do whatever we felt would be “”Super Street”” in our eyes—we immediately brainstormed on what that would be. But we weren’t alone; our Wolf Pack brethren at Import Tuner and Modified were also given a Sonic of their own. Both took expected but respective themes—the “”””all go everything”””” race-prepped hatch by Modified and a more VIP/light performance style LZ sedan from Import Tuner. So that got us thinking: yes, we can do a bit of the same but what if we dug deeper into our other interests? The answer was both in our hands and blasting from our computer speakers. We would turn ours into a mobile hot spot.

If you ever find yourself in the company of any SS editor, you’ll quickly discover two things: they are always on their iPhone (every 30 seconds on Instagram) and they are constantly listening to music. Sam’s cubicle is similar to the hard electro main stage you’d find at EDC, Matty’s is some sort of weird trap music hole and Jonathan’s is some R&B mix from the mid ’90s; needless to say, it’s an eclectic variation of music at any given time. What if we could give our Sonic the technology to allow us to stay connected and give it a proper audio setup that someone like Diplo would be proud of? That’s when we called Mike Vu at MV Designz for his expertise in crafting a custom build of this caliber.

Along with our basic ideas, Mike also came up with more than a handful of other suggestions to help play up the technology factor of our car. Rather than simply plug in a wireless router and call it a day, we decided to turn the rear passenger area into a multimedia control center. Mounted to the headrests of our Recaro Sportster seats, we’re now able to control (via Apple iPads) a series of Vivotek cameras: two facing the front passengers, one facing the rear, another that raises up from the roof for a 360-degree panoramic view and one to view our DJ setup. Say what? Pop the rear trunk and you not only see the entire Pioneer car audio sub/amp display but all the DJ gear to control the party, such as a DJM-900 NEXUS mixer and a pair of CDJ900s. But wait—that’s not all! The Sonic is indeed Wi-Fi-enabled, so aside from the iPads, approved users can connect and socialize from their own devices, or you can tune in to any one of the on-board cameras to see what we’re up to (find more info at We’ve also installed a few LG HD video projectors to play back any video or live feed from any of the cameras. There’s a custom rear console with one that projects onto a special window film for playback, another that actually projects onto a larger wall (if so desired) and one that’s hidden within the rear hatch lid.

Now, with all these high-tech goodies on board, we couldn’t just leave it stock otherwise, so we went for simple mods that we knew would hit hard. At stock height, the Sonic is pretty meh but after fitting on a custom Air Lift air suspension kit, slamming it down to the ground changed our minds immediately. Even better are the finned 19″””” Rotiform IND wheels, which came about more accidentally than planned but we’re more than thrilled with how these look. For just a bit of extra power, we had GM’s own Performance division hook us up with one of their direct replacement exhaust systems. We do plan on upgrading the engine a little more down the road with perhaps an intercooler, intake or a meth injection kit.

Though it might seem like this car is the odd sibling of the three, it actually turned out to be quite fun. We’ve thrown parties with it (catch our videos on YouTube) and best of all, at least for us, we can use it to satisfy our social media hunger pains.

GReddy 2JZ 2013 Scion FR-S – Living The Dream


GReddy has a long-standing history of turning out probably the most well-known cars, both here and in Japan, but their latest 2013 Scion FR-S is much more a labor of love than just another work project. What started simply as an opportunity to showcase at Scion’s SEMA booth last fall turned into something far more exciting: it was their chance to build a dream FR-S for Formula Drift pro Ken Gushi. GReddy put this car together in a matter of weeks and entirely around the DL. We didn’t have any idea it existed until the Scion SEMA preview party in the event it took us completely by surprise, and after that just about the entire world the days following on social media. Between our R&D staff and Ken Gushi, we jotted down notes on what we all wanted in a racecar, explains Mike Chung, Planning Manager for GReddy. Setting it aside from [Ken’s] current drift FR-S, we all decided it would be best to go with the most iconic Toyota engine we could think of: the 2JZ-GTE. The 2JZ powerplant laid the building blocksjust about anything you pull from their extensive catalog will certainly deliver solid power gains. They were even set to race a Supra at LeMans but a car accident during testing before the race killed that plan quickly; Ken Gushi also has a lot of experience piloting 2J-powered cars-his FD Asia competition car is a Toyota Chaser, in the late ’90s. What people know and love about the 2JZ is that it’s the kind of engine that can make tons of reliable power without having to worry about stressing it significantly. Since the discharge of the FR-S, there’s been much debate tossed around as to whether or otherwise not the FA20 is indeed the perfect engine for your car-and largely, it is-but we’ve seen successful swaps including the EJ-powered GReddy drift car or domestic LS-swapped. But as the 2JZ is one of those infamous engines, it makes perfect sense to wish to test it all out in one of Toyota’s most popularthe best turbo for any high horsepower 2JZ setup like this car.

According to how GReddy describes the process fitting the 2JZ into an FR-S isn’t a drop-in affair but it’s not terribly difficult: The FR-S engine bay is actually pretty big, says Mike. Besides clearing more room for your transmission bell housing and round the ends from the valve cover, it’s a good fit. There’s really just one position you can place the front-sump 2JZ-GTE in the car without needing to make extensive modifications for the firewall. Custom engine mounts are a given, and with a lot room within the engine bay, the option to utilize a larger turbo and intake manifold is really a choice GReddy would gladly take up. That’s why we opted for a bottom-mounted turbo, so we may make a simple, large downpipe, he adds. The base engine itself has been stroked and built to 3.4-liters total, and links up to a four-speed G-Force GSR transmission that has been upgraded with the OS Giken RC3 triple-plate Super and clutch Lock limited-slip differential. The one thing keeping this car from firing up is the possible lack of an engine harness, which, by the time you are doing read this, will finally fire up thanks to a MoTeC M600 engine management system, as of press time.this specific setup is perfect for roughly 700 horsepower, a number that isn’t way too hard for a 2JZ-GTE to reach and it is quite mellow compared to the plethora of 1000 builds already completed. The main goal is a lot more than to provide a high powered competition car; this really is Ken Gushi’s dream build and as such are able to stand up to any racing challenge he chooses to compete in, be it drift, road racing, tarmac racing or even quarter-mile action.

Men drive pickup trucks for all sorts of different reasons but there just might be one more to add to the list. According to an insurance survey women are most attracted to guys who drive pickup trucks and least attracted to those driving a mail truck . . . especially if it’s orange.


That’s just one more reason to click on and see what’s about . . . they’ve got some real belters.
This survey deduced that men who climb up into big, bad pickup trucks are the ones which deserve the most attention. The type of guy who drives a pickup truck can also fix any leaking pipes and do odd jobs and, because pickup trucks are not renowned for being the most fuel efficient motors on the road they are also not afraid to pump a few dollars into the gas tank. Anyone who needs $100 to fill up the gas tank must have $100 in his pocket . . . do you get the drift?
What a man drives really does make a difference to his attractiveness to women – here’s the list in all its glory.
• 32 per cent of women are most attracted to men who drive pickup trucks
• 27 per cent of women in the survey are more attracted to sports car drivers – you’d have thought that would be the other way around wouldn’t you?
• 16 per cent of women expressed a preference for men who drive an SUV
• 11 per cent of the women surveyed were attracted to drivers of sedans
• Electric and hybrid cars came next getting around 9 per cent of the vote
• 4 per cent of women find themselves attracted to men who drive UPS trucks – I’m not sure where that curved ball came from


• Minivan drivers are only attractive to 2 per cent of women
• Last on the list comes mail trucks – with less than 1 per cent of women admitting that they find mail truck drivers attractive
In the interests of fair play we’d better take a look at this from the other point of view. Not unsurprisingly men are most likely to turn their heads to a woman behind the wheel of a red sports car. Two seaters send out the “”no kids”” signal loud and clear, the fact that these cars are relatively expensive is another bonus but also indicates that it is probably on lease hire . . . another indication that they aren’t heavily driven by commitment. If you have a convertible it means that you won’t spend too much time worrying about having a hair out of place.
Here’s the list from the survey about which women drivers men find most attractive:
• Sports cars are firmly at the top of the list with 39 per cent of the vote . . . particularly red sports cars


• Sedans come in second with around 22 per cent of the vote
• SUVs aren’t far behind on 20 per cent
• Only 10 per cent of men are most attracted to women who drive pickup trucks – I suppose that the qualities a pickup truck speaks about a man are not necessarily desirable when they are the other way around
• 6 per cent of men are attracted to women who drive electric or hybrid vehicles
• Minivans come in last with just 4 per cent of the vote. I’m not sure why mail vans and UPS trucks weren’t included for this survey, or perhaps they were but nobody noticed.

1989 Mazda RX-7 FC – Windy City Wangan


Japanese tuning, in its purest form, encompasses a representation of style and functionality not often captured here in the States. While there may be 1000s of current and classic Japanese platforms being modified in the U.S. each year, it’s a rarity to find cars today that actually define the essence of any time attack machine assembled across the Pacific. Though most of these projects are few and far between, every once in a while a certain car appears that oozes Japanese style.

Xiong Kou Lor is a guy who, simply put, gets it. That’s painfully apparent from the first time you lay eyes on his gorgeous ’89 Mazda RX-7. As a film director could possibly say about an actress cast to try out a starring role, “She’s just got the look.” This FC would look just at home in the pages of Option Magazine as it does here in Modified. But don’t be fooled by the flawlessly executed and incredibly detailed car prior to deciding to-this build was far from a stroll in the park.It all began one fateful day in secondary school. A friend introduced Xiong Kou to an episode of Initial D, the classic Japanese anime cartoon featuring the life span of a teenage boy along with his tofu-delivering AE86. Though he wasn’t considering cars and had no formal experience wrenching on automobiles, Xiong Kou was fascinated. He became obsessed, as he dove into the series and began to learn more about Japanese FR platforms. At the time, most American enthusiasts were focused on FF platforms. To top it off, most had never even heard about drifting.

Always striving being different, Xiong Kou wished to set himself apart from the crowd. At 17 years of age, he picked up his first car: a ’90 Mazda RX-7 GTU. “I wanted a vehicle that no one had, and additional studying of the rotary engine made me love its uniqueness,” he explains. After enjoying his first FC for a few years, Xiong Kou discovered that his Mazda simply became too impractical for daily use. Eventually, he finished up selling the vehicle. But as fate might have it, he stumbled upon an ’89 FC RX-7 Turbo 2 on the market with a blown engine just a few short months later. What was meant to be a fast repair and flip converted into a project that would span the subsequent decade of Xiong Kou’s change and lifeand then he set out to create an FC of his own that would truly capture his dream car’s Japanese spirit. The hours spent poring over copies of Hyper Rev, Option Magazine, and Japanese blogs he couldn’t understand became the extensive blueprint for his eventual masterpiece. But even if he collected a slew of the more sought after parts from the Land of the Rising Sun, there was always the concern in the back of his mind that things just wouldn’t click together in the end.

One might argue that the coolest point about this wild RE-Amemiya-themed FC build is the exterior. A host of aero components were sourced from Sakae Inukai, the sales rep for RE-Amemiya in Japan. With Inukai-san’s help, Xiong Kou was able to get his mitts on a complete aero kit, together with a front canards, hood and bumper side steps, GT wing, diffuser, side mirrors, and headlight air duct. Though it took more than six months time for these über-rare components going to the States, it’s clear to see they were well worth the wait. The result is ana set of Panspeed over fenders were added to complete the aggressive look. When everything had finally arrived stateside, Xiong Kou collaborated with Elvis Espino of Nisma Auto Paint Repair to bring his vision to reality. Xiong Kou gave Elvis full creative freedom with the hue of the exterior, along with the resulting Mitsubishi Dover White finish does more than justice to this distinctly Japanese machine.

But the plan didn’t call for a car with only a pretty exterior. Bucking the craze to stuff an American V-8 under that rare RE-Amemiya bonnet, Xiong Kou stuck with a street-ported 13B with a twin turbo setup modeled after the one found in-you guessed it-RE-Amemiya’s time attack car. A pair of TD05-14B turbochargers work their magic on the Wankel powerplant while a slew of supporting modifications were added to complete the setup, including a variety of items from your newer FD RX-7 chassis. Though he left the actual engine assembly work to the pros (when it comes to rotaries, we can’t say we blame him! ), everything else was custom fabricated by Xiong Kou, despite a definitive lack of experience of the automotive world-a classic demonstration of a passionate individual with the motivation to find outin a fashion that would make whenever attack mechanic smile. After many years of searching for a clean pair of discontinued Bride Zeta II bucket seats, Xiong Kou finally found the perfect set for sale in the Honda forums. The Zeta IIs bring a distinct period-correct feel to the FC’s cockpit which simply couldn’t be accomplished with more modern-day buckets. Sabelt harnesses work alongside a modified and repainted Safety 21 rollcage to perpetuate the racing theme. Once again, Xiong Kou turned into his contact at RE-Amemiya to source a rare D-cut steering wheel and shift knob. In true drift car spirit, a custom gauge cluster composed primarily of Auto Meter Phantom gauges adds a unique touch to the car’s interior. All unnecessary panels and trim pieces happen to be removed, while the sheetmetal continues to be painted white to match the car’s exterior. It’s challenging to deny that Xiong Kou hit all the small details in his pursuit of the perfect interior.

No purpose-built machine will be complete without taking the necessary steps to ensure everything is to be able where the rubber meets the highway. Without the capability to put the power to the ground and negotiate the twisties efficiently, all of Xiong Kou’s efforts would be in vain. A pair of Tein RA coilovers were chosen because the backbone of the suspension system, with numerous braces and bushings given by Cusco and Mazdatrix assisting with chassis flex.

As far as rolling stock is involved, this FC is equipped with some lightweight 17×9.5 super brilliant coating (SBC) Enkei RPF1s clad with race-ready 255/40 Advan A048 tires. This combination adds as much to the car’s Japanese time attack machine appearance mainly because it does to the on-track performance.

Despite the fact that Xiong Kou had never turned a wrench in his life, he spent countless hours over a span greater than a decade finding out how to complete the appropriate tasks himself whenever he possibly could. It’s this kind of love and dedication for a car that results in the detailed, long-term builds we commonly see emerging from Japan. It’s safe to say the massive volume of time and energy put forth have more than paid off, using the finished product being a rotary-powered beast that would look just at home lapping Tsukuba circuit as it does cruising the streets and highways between downtown and Wisconsin Chicago. But like any true long-term time attack build, it’s a never-ending process. There’s always something to be improved on in search of the perfect lap. This won’t function as the last we hear of Xiong Kou Lor with his fantastic wild FC if we were required to guess.

2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X – Living The Dream


Remember when you initially became thinking about modifying cars? While it’s not true for everyone, many people started our tuning careers with loads of passion and a lack of cashflow to turn our dreams into reality. To top it well, it can be pretty tough to get into this hobby with a less than desirable platform to build on, especially when a number of the people at local track days and shows are sporting expensive and heavily modified rides. But with enough motivation and patience, those humble beginnings can eventually produce some pretty impressive automobiles.

Growing up in Abu Dhabi, Mark Aquino was mostly surrounded by exotics and luxury euro cars. In fact, the import scene was all but non-existent at the time. It wasn’t until Mark traveled to college from the Philippines that he discovered his passion for Japanese tuning-at the hands of an ’89 Mitsubishi Lancer. However the car was old along with too many issues to count, he was attached to the little Mitsu. Knowing almost nothing about cars and fueled by inspiration from The Fast and the Furious, Mark began down the rough path of modifying a vehicle with little aftermarket support. He added the standard beginner modifications, including an intake, exhaust, and the bodyAs Mark continued to modify his Lancer, he stumbled about the Evolution lineup. Essentially a turbocharged AWD version of his Lancer, the differing generations of Evos appeared to be the greatest all-around platforms to modify. “Rally and track champions, four doors,AWD and turbocharged, etc. What’s to not love? I dreamt of driving and owning one someday,” Mark recalls. It was around this time that Mitsubishi released its final iteration of the Lancer Evolution, the Evo X. Mark had become obsessed, before he knew it.

After landing his first job out of college, Mark transferred to the United States. When he arrived, one of the first things he needed to do was get a car. Unfortunately, the Evo X was out of the question back then, so he had to settle for an Eclipse. Though it was still within the Mitsubishi family, it was far from his dream car. After working for some time and continuing to immerse himself in the U.S. tuning scene, Mark was finally able to obtain his dream ride. On New Year’s Eve 2010, he became the proud owner of a brand-new Evo X. He told himself the automobile was perfect and he would never modify it. Sound familiar?

Needless to say, a gearhead can only remain content for so long, and before he knew it, Mark was commencing to dive into tinkering together with the Evo. He began with simple engine modifications, checking out several mixtures of intake, exhaust, and intercooler components until he was 100 percent satisfied. The automobile is now designed with a GReddy front mount intercooler, AMS intercooler piping, and an ARC airbox, since it stands today. A complete turboback exhaust system from Ultimate Racing works with the other breathing mods to unleash a hefty amount of power on account of the Cobb Accessport tuned by Aaron O’Neil of English Racing. A slew of dress-up items also provides the engine bay plenty of spice without groing through the top.

Mark’s goal would be to build an Evo X that could be driven reliably each day while still offering the capability to win an auto show or take a thrashing out on the track from time to time. With more power on tap for such occasions, Mark chose to focus on suspension and braking mods next. However the Evo is really a capable performer from the get-go, the stock struts and springs were tossed to opt for a set of HKS Hypermax III coilovers. The factory Brembo calipers were treated to Girodisc two-piece slotted brake rotors and Project Mu NS400 brake pads on all four corners, as well as stainlesssuspension and engine modifications set him up for some fun in the track without having to sacrifice reliability, he wanted his Evo to stand out from the group visually. The auto was shipped to Auto Performance Aesthetics Club for an exterior makeover. Mark chose a rare mash-up of aero components to give his car an exclusive, one-off appearance. Chargespeed wide front and rear fenders were installed alongside a collection of the company’s V2 carbon-fiber side skirts. But at the start, Mark went with an M-sport front bumper, complete with a carbon-fiber front lip and canards. Out back, you’ll find a set of LED taillights plus a Showstoppers rear diffuser. Regardless of the exterior modifications coming from several different manufacturers, everything flows together incredibly well. A set of Ganador LED Super Aero mirrors rounds the car’s aggressive look. To get the final icing on the cake, a set of gorgeous matte bronze-faced SSR Professor SP3 wheels complete with anodized bronze lips was installed, along with Falken Azenis RT615K rubber.

When Mark’s fiancée, Stephanie, heard that he had his sights set on competing in his first track day, she surprised him with some spice for his interior. She went all out and purchased a set of Takata racing seats and six-point harness belts to the car to hold Mark snug and safe during his time on the right track. (If you ask us, she’s a keeper! ) In addition to the Takata gear, the automobile is equipped with a Cusco six-point rollcage and rear diagonal bar, adding further chassis rigidity and safety during this process. A Personal steering wheelIf you were to ask Mark back in his Lancer days if he thought he would build and own an Evolution of this caliber someday, it’s safe to say he probably could have been skeptical at best. Though it can be tough starting this hobby in a less-than-ideal situation, Mark Aquino and his Evo X are a fantastic example it pays to dream big. With perseverance and a very well thought out plan, Mark has built a reliable car that’s fun to drive, effective at taking home a trophy at a car show, as well as a blast to drive on and off the track. Seeing that Mark has produced an Evo that’s nicer than he had ever imagined, what’s next? From what Mark tells us, he’s hard at work helping Stephanie modify her Evo X and plans to bump power levels a bit in his own X with a new head and turbo work. Talk about livin’ the dream!

2013 Scion FR-S (ZN6) – FR-Supercar


It was on October2013 and 11, that Scion announced its partnership with Bulletproof Automotive to generate a supercar concept build to debut on the SEMA show utilizing the FR-S platform. An FR-S supercar . . . well, we all know the Scion FR-S, but what exactly makes a car a supercar? Ben Schaffer, president of Bulletproof Automotive, has a distinct definition that had been the foundation for the build. However, this represents a relatively early state of tune, with Iroz aiming for 600awhp and 650 lb-ft at 35psi with software revisions.

Iroz had done his homework, although we had been genuinely shocked to see the 31 year-old car had such brutal acceleration. The transmission’s innards, for example, were from the B5 Audi RS4, while the stock locking rear diff will probably be swapped for any Wavetrac unit to help in the turns.
